ISLAMABAD: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) remained under control during first 10 months (July-April) of fiscal year 2014-15 and touched the lowest level of 2.1 percent since 2003. According to the economic survey unveiled by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday, the average inflation measured through the CPI remained at 4.8 percent in July-April 2014-15 against 8.7 percent in the same period last year, while Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation was registered at 0.03 percent as compared to 8.3 percent last year. Similar is the trend in Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for 53 essential items which registered a rise of 1.9 percent against 9.8 percent in the same period last year. The divergent trend in the price indices is due to their composition, coverage and nature of items. Wholesale price inflation stayed in negative zone for the last five months in a row and inflationary pressure may further ease out in coming months.
