Govt moves for consensus on Ramazan, Eid moon sighting
ISLAMABAD: It appears the Pakistani government is proactively taking steps this year to prevent the recurrence of a controversy that mars the sighting of the Ramazan and Eid moons.
Every year, a disagreement arises between local religious scholars (Ulema) – mostly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province – and the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, resulting in different areas of Pakistan celebrating Eid on different dates.
But this year, the federal government is taking preemptive measures in an effort to ensure that Eid is celebrated on the same day across the country.
In this regard, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Mohammad Yousuf has contacted KP Provincial Minister for Religious Affairs Haji Habibur Rahman as well as other Ulema over the telephone, asking them for their cooperation in ensuring Razaman commences on the same date across the country.
Appealing to the clerics to abide by the decision of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, the federal minister said that efforts are being made to ensure that the announcements for the Ramazan and Eid moons are made after consensus.
He said that the government was trying to build consensus on the issue with clerics of all sects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the province most affected by the controversy.
Yousuf said that the government will also contact the cleric (muhtamim) of the Masjid-e-Qasim in this regard.
