Markets reopen after partial strike against 'anti-urban' Sindh budget
KARACHI: Public transport and commercial activity appeared to be returning to normal in urban Sindh on Sunday after a partial strike was observed in parts of the province on the call of the MQM in protest against an ‘anti-urban’ budget by the PPP-led provincial government.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) had given the call on Saturday for a shutter-down strike across Sindh against the budget, asking traders, industrialists and transporters to support the strike call by shutting their business.
The MQM had also appealed to traders, industrialists, shopkeepers and transporters to resume their businesses at 1:00 PM noon on Sunday.
At noon, businesses and transport appeared to be returning to normal in several parts of Karachi and Hyderabad.
Earlier, shops, CNG stations, petrol pumps and Sunday Bazaars remained shut in some areas of Karachi. Traffic remained sparse in Hyderabad as petrol stations remained closed in various areas of the city.
A partial strike was also observed in Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Nawabshah, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jacobabad and other cities.
The Rabita Committee had termed the Sindh budget 2015-16 as ‘biased’, saying the Pakistan People’s Party's (PPP) provincial government had presented an ‘anti-urban’ Sindh budget which shows prejudiced thinking of the ruling party.
