NAB fully committed to eradicating corruption, says chairman

QUETTA: Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry has said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is committed to eradicate corruption under its ‘zero tolerance policy’ across the country.

He made these remarks while addressing NAB officers in Quetta during his visit to Balochistan on Friday.

The NAB chairman further said that the recent reports of independent watchdogs like the Transparency International had improved the rating of Pakistan from 175 to 126 in its Corruption Perception Index (CPI).

He added that PILDAT also in its recent report mentioned that 42% people trusted NAB against 30% for police and 29% for other government departments, which is a great achievement for NAB.

Chaudhry said the menace of corruption has links to a multitude of vices. It creates a sense of insecurity, hopelessness and despondency, he added. He further said, “In our own peculiar case the twin menaces of corruption and poverty are closely interlinked. A surge in one has a direct bearing on the other.”

He said that good governance means authorities becoming accountable and utilising public funds prudently to ensure optimum return for each rupee spent from the national exchequer. “We have to redouble our efforts to come up to the expectations associated with NAB,” he said. He reiterated NAB’s commitment to eradicate the scourge of corruption.

“But I must admit that NAB alone cannot fight the war against corruption. It is a collective social responsibility,” the NAB chairman said. The intelligentsia and media have to play an important role. “On the part of NAB, we are determined to perform our duties with absolute professionalism,” he added.

Appreciating the performance of all officers/officials of Balochistan NAB under the supervision of its DG, Chaudhry reiterated his firm resolve for eradication of corruption and corrupt practices by adopting holistic and proactive approach through enforcement besides awareness and prevention strategy. He directed all officers/officials of Balochistan NAB to put in their best efforts in conduct of complaint verification, inquiries and investigations against corrupt elements in accordance with the laid down laws/SOPs, transparently and on merit.
