KARACHI: Prof Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi, the pioneer of organ transplant surgery in the country, has urged the Pakistani youth to get themselves involved in voluntary work especially related to patient care.
Addressing the participants of the 40th Student Volunteer Programme organised by the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) in a certificate distribution ceremony on Saturday, he said that there was an urgent need to develop a strong culture of volunteer work in the country.
The weeklong SIUT’s Student Volunteer Programme has over the period attracted large number of school- and college-going students of the city who during their vacation took part in a variety of activities related to patient care.
Prof Rizvi, who is also the Director of SIUT, said the programme was very important for students at this young age as they are the real future of Pakistan. “The programme is designed to help them learn and understand the problems and suffering of fellow human beings that not only brings a positive change in their outlook towards life but is equally beneficial for the entire society,” he said.
During the weeklong exercise the students are introduced to guidelines related to patient care in particular and medical care in general and these are mainly in the field of radiology, clinical laboratory, dialysis, transplantation, lithotripsy besides other medical, surgical and allied services, he added. They are also taught core principles of community service, he said. He added the importance of community service in the society cannot be over-emphasised as it not only refines the person but also provides him/her with a direction and sense of purpose.
The current batch of summer vacation included 162 students who completed a comprehensive 30-hour training programme. Since inception of the SIUT’s Students Volunteer Training Programme more than 4,000 students from different educational institutions from all over Karachi have been imparted the needed training in an extremely relevant field.
The certificate distribution ceremony was attended by a large number of parents, teachers and students. The programme, an annual feature of SIUT, is extremely popular in the student community of Karachi.
