Nawaz calls off meeting with Zardari
INPISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday called off a meeting with former president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari after the latter faced outcry following his criticism of the army.
Both the leaders were scheduled to hold a meeting at PM House in Islamabad today. PPP sources confirmed that the prime minister called off the meeting, while PM House spokesperson refused to issue a comment over why the meeting had been cancelled.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif while reacting to the statement of Asif Zardari said that criticism on army was inappropriate. "Armed forces are playing a crucial role in the operation Zarb-e-Azb and implementation of the National Action Plan. The Whole nation is supporting armed forces," he added.
The development comes a day after the former president of Pakistan threatened the country's war machine with dire consequences like “exposing the corruption of former generals”. Zardari said the military generals' tenures were no longer than a few years, but political parties like the PPP virtually lasted forever.
