Political parties unanimous against Army’s negative portrayal

ISLAMABAD: Leaders of political parties that attended an Iftar dinner by PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Friday night were unanimous against portraying a negative image of the armed forces of the country.

Apprising the media about details of the meeting, PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said that all leaders agreed over protecting the honour and reputation of the Army at all costs. Pakistan Army is the defender of the country’s geographical and ideological borders, he added.

The PML-Q chief said he advised former president Zardari to continue his policy of reconciliation, which he added was in the interest of the whole nation.

Earlier, clarifying a recent fiery speech by the PPP co-chairman, senior party leader Sherry Rehman had said that Mr Zardari’s remarks were aimed at former military dictators and not the current leadership of the armed forces.

“Army chief Gen Raheel Sharif is an honest and true commander, and we have the highest respect for him,” Sherry Rehman told reporters alongside senior leader Qamar Zaman Kaira following the Iftar dinner at the Zardari House here.
