NAB action leads to completion of Gwadar project
QUETTA: On the directions of National Accountability Bureau Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, NAB Balochistan took cognisance of the undue delay in the completion of mega project Desalination Plant of 2 MGD at Karwat (Gwadar), said a press release.
Initially the project was proposed for the industrial zone, however, it was delayed and later decided that the same water will be provided to the people of Gwadar and Gevni. The project was pending for a long time. Due to NAB’s efforts, the mega project of Desalination Plant of 2 MGD at Karwat (Gwadar) has been completed. The federal minister for planning and development, the Balochistan Development Authority chairman and deputy commissioner Gwadar visited the site and expressed satisfaction over the completion of work.
The project was initiated in 2006. However, it was being delayed under one pretext or the other till the NAB Balochistan on the directions of its chairman took notice of the undue delay in the completion of the project. Subsequently, an inquiry was authorised against the officials of BDA and the contractors of the project. Relevant record was collected, the concerned were examined and the ground check was conducted. Finally, the officials and contractors agreed to resume the work, the handout said.
The press release mentions that there was no pipeline laid for the supply of water to the city of Gwadar and adjoining areas. Due to NAB’s efforts, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department Balochistan managed to lay the water supply pipelines in the city. The contractors are also bound to operate and maintain the plant for one year after commissioning.
Meanwhile, it will be decided by the provincial government that to whom this project would be handed over for maintaining and running purposes. The people of Gwadar and Jevni have appreciated the efforts by the NAB chairman and NAB Balochistan for provision of safe and cheap potable water to the 0.25 million people at their doorsteps.
