PML-N’s Hafeezur Rahman elected GB CM unopposed

GILGIT: Hafiz Hafeezur Rahman of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has been elected the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan unopposed.

He was elected an MLA from Gilgit city. Gilgit-Baltistan Governor and Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and GB Chaudhry Barjees Tahir administered the oath to the new CM.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif could not participate in the oath-taking ceremony due to bad weather. Hafeez is the president of the PML-N Gilgit-Baltistan. He enjoys the support of 22 members in the 33-member Legislative Assembly. Haji Fida Muhammad Nashad and Jaffarullah Khan were elected speaker and deputy speaker, respectively, on Thursday.

Talking to reporters after the ceremony, the GB governor said that one more democratic phase in GB had been accomplished with the efforts of the federal government. He said that people of GB had voted for the PML-N, which showed their trust in the party leadership. He said that the government would introduce mega development projects in the region in accordance with the vision of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif congratulated Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman on taking oath as the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan. He expressed the hope that Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman during his tenure of government would play an effective role in the uplift of people and development of the area on a priority basis so that the PML-N could fulfil its promises in line with its manifesto.
