Climate Change Ministry forms body to probe into heat spell
* Body will submit recommendations to climate change minister in two weeks
ISLAMABAD: The Climate Change Ministry on Monday notified a heatwave probe committee, which will delve into the causes of searing heat spell in the country, particularly in Karachi.
Former Pakistan Meteorological Department Dr director-general Qamaruz Zaman Chaudhry has been selected as convener of the committee named ‘Expert Study and Investigative Group’ comprises former director-general of Pakistan Meteorological Department, read a press release.
The probe committee comprises of Pakistan Meteorological Department DG Dr Ghulam Rasul, at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Member (Disaster Risk Reduction) Ahmad Kamal, Climatology Head at the Global Change Impact Study Centre Islamabad Shahbaz Mahmood, National Health Emergency Preparedness of the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination DG Munir Ahmad Mangrio, one representative each from all provincial disaster management authorities.
Climate Change Minister Mushahidullah Khan said, “The heatwave probe committee will analyse and investigate the main causes of recent heat wave in the country, especially in Karachi; propose ways and means to tackle these kinds of incidents in future, develop strategy for institutional capacity-building and awareness-raising, formulate comprehensive report/recommendations to enhance understanding and capacity to respond to the similar situations.” The body would formulate its recommendations and submit its report to the climate change minister in two weeks.
