No loadshedding in name of uplift work in Ramazan: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered on Tuesday to carry out power supply and demand analysis up to 2023. Accordingly, he directed the Ministry of Water and Power to undertake integrated long-term planning on fulfilling the energy needs of the country.

The prime minister was chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCE) where it was unanimously approved that no power shutdowns will take place in any part of the country on account of development works during the month of Ramazan.

It was the fourth huddle of the CCE in less than a fortnight where the power supply and relevant situation was thoroughly deliberated. The prime minister stressed pro-active planning regarding the power supply and demand.

He also directed to work out shifting of scheduled outages of power plants in view of repairs and maintenance from summer to winter to ensure maximum power supply. Secretary Water and Power Yusuf Nasim Khokhar briefed the meeting on the progress of decisions made in the previous meeting, including working of the inter-ministerial committee of finance, water and power and petroleum and natural resources ministries, power supply and demand analysis till September 2018 and utilisation of idle power plants.

It was also decided that factors including increase in use of electric appliances due to economic prosperity and behavioural patterns of power consumers be included in the estimation of projected power demands. The CCE also accorded in-principle approval for establishment of a new LNG based 1,200 MW capacity power plant.

Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Minister for Finance Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Planning and Development Professor Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbassi, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb, Secretary to the Prime Minister (SPM) Fawad Hasan Fawad, Federal Secretary for Petroleum Sultan Sakandar Raja, Cabinet Secretary Nadim Assef Hasan, Secretary Finance Tariq Bajwa and other senior officials attended the meeting.
