Six killed as dust storm sweeps through Karachi, may hit the city again today
KARACHI: Death toll from a dust storm in the metropolis climbed to six on Thursday as the Met Department issued another advisory for Karachi warning that storms could hit the port city again today.
According to the reports, authorities have issued an alert for Rangers and the police following the advisory by the Met Office.
On Wednesday, a woman along with five others was killed and more than 15 were injured as a heavy dust storm wreaked havoc in the metropolis.
Weather forecasters fear strong winds could pick up again originating from the north. In the second wave, light rain is also expected in the plains of the city.
Due to strong winds, various incidents were reported in the city in which 4 people including a woman lost their lives while 18 people were injured.
Meanwhile, most areas of the city saw power outages after the storms. Power supply was suspended in Saddar, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Lyari, Aurangi Town, Malir, New Karachi, Korangi and other areas.
During the dust and thunderstorm that originated in the Gadap and Super Highway areas and soon gripped the entire city, several roofs were caved in and walls collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least three people, including an elderly woman, while around 15 people were injured who were shifted to different health facilities in the city.
People were startled by the dust storm’s sudden appearance but none more than K-Electric, whose systems failed, leaving multiple areas in the dark for eight to 10 hours.
Power outages were reported in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 13, Korangi, Orangi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Surjani, Malir, Landhi, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Gadap, North Karachi, Safoora Goth, Shah Faisal, Shadman Town, Industrial Area, Federal B Area and Sindhi Hotel, among many other areas.
Yesterday evening, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had issued an advisory asking fishermen of Sindh to remain careful and “not to venture in deep sea till June 4 due to rough sea conditions”.
