CCI to deal with repayment of national debts

By Iqbal Choudhry

ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary committee on constitutional reforms on Wednesday developed a consensus on an amendment to the article of the constitution dealing with the repayment of national debts, giving the Council of Common Interests (CCI) the authority to deal with repayments, sources told Daily Times on Wednesday.

A three-hour meeting, presided over by Senator Raza Rabbani, discussed Articles 166-176 and other issues. The committee also deliberated on the chapter on provincial autonomy, and recommendations on the subject are likely to be announced later.

According to the sources, the meeting agreed on finalising matters related to the administration and repayment of foreign debts through the CCI.

Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the leader of the opposition in National Assembly, has not attended any of the committee’s meetings. PML-N leader Siddiqul Farooq said his party had told the committee chairman that Nisar would not attend any meeting. “Ishaq Dar, Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan and Ahsan Iqbal are representing PML N at the meetings,” he said.

Meanwhile, a controversy between the PML N and the ANP over a proposal to rename NWFP persists.
