Water level could reach 1,250 feet in Mangla Dam
* Experts say rise in water levels would benefit crops
ISLAMABAD: The water level could reach 1,250 feet after the raising of Mangla Dam is completed, water experts said on Friday.
According to the experts, water level in the dam would continue to rise until it reached the maximum level of 1,202 feet and further increase to 1,250 feet when the raising would be completed. Water level improved considerably in reservoirs particularly in both Tarbela and Mangla dams as water increased by 24.26 feet from the dead level in Tarbela dam and by 5 feet in Mangla Dam.
Water level in Tarbela Dam was recorded at 1393.26 feet while the dead level was 1,369 feet with an increase of 1.77 percent. According to Indus River System Authority (IRSA) data, water inflow at the dam was recorded at 29,300 cusecs and the outflow remained at 35,000 cusecs.
Water inflow at main rim stations decreased to 82,925 cusecs while outflow remained 104,210 cusecs, according to IRSA data. About 21,225 cusecs of extra water was released from the main rim station, which precludes a water crisis at major dams in the future. The water level in Mangla Dam increased by 5 feet to reach 1045 feet, while the dead level was at 1,040 feet. The inflow at the reservoir was recorded at 19,415 cusecs, while the outflow was 35,000 cusecs.
Water experts believe that current rising of water level in Mangla Dam would leave a positive impact for enhancing the power generation capacity from Mangla besides increasing the per acre yield of crops. Water in Chashma Dam was 645.30 feet, while the dead level was 637 feet. The main water inflow at the dam was recorded at 53,390 cusecs and the outflow at 47,000 cusecs while the Chashma-Jhelum (CJ Link) link canal remained closed and 4083 cusec water was diverted to Chashma Right Bank Canal (CRBC).
IRSA data revealed that upper stream discharge from Kalabagh was at 54,977 cusecs, while 47,977 cusecs water discharged on down stream and the remaining water of 7,000 cusec was diverted to the Thal canal.
On Taunsa Barrage, 42,201 cusecs water was discharged on upper stream and 39,205 cusec water discharged on down stream while remaining 2,996 cusec water was diverted to the Taunsa-Punjnad (T-P Link) link canal, while Muzaffargarh and Dera Ghazi Khan canal remained closed. 26,230 cusecs water was discharged on upper stream from Sukkur Barrage and 4,550 cusecs water on down stream, while rest of 21,680 cusecs water was diverted to canals.
The IRSA data showed that on Guddu Barrage 34,000 cusecs water discharged on upper stream and 29,917 cusecs on down stream, while remaining 4,083 cusecs water was diverted to canals. staff report
