PML-N wins Lahore, Jhang by-elections
* Unofficial results declare Zia League candidate victorious in Bahawalnagar
LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) claimed two of the three seats up for grabs in Wednesday’s by-elections, with victories in NA-123 Lahore and PP-82 Jhang, according to the unofficial results declared on Wednesday. In PP-284 Bahawalnagar, the candidate from the Pakistan Muslim League-Zia (PML-Z) emerged victorious.
NA-123 Lahore: The winning candidate, PML-N’s Pervaiz Malik, secured approx 45,889 votes, while his main rival, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s Mian Hamid Mairaj, received 9440 votes. However, the announcement of the official election results from NA-123 is linked with the verdict of the Supreme Court, where a three-member bench is hearing a petition challenging the Election Commission’s decision to issue a fresh schedule for the by-polls there.
PP-82 Jhang: The PML-N’s Mian Azam Chela secured 41,062 votes, while his opponent, the Pakistan Peoples Party’s Ghazanfar Khan Jabowana, managed to secure 29,653 votes. Here, the Lahore High Court has stayed the announcement of official results on a petition filed by Faisal Hayat Jabowana, challenging Azam Chela’s candidature.
PP-284 Bahawalnagar: The Zia League’s Chaudhry Shahid Anjum emerged victorious with 49,913 votes against the 25,548 votes obtained by his rival from the PPP, Kashif Naveed Pansota. Although the official results have yet to be announced, all three constituencies witnessed nightlong celebrations by the victorious candidates. Crowds of their supporters sang and danced on the streets and distributed sweetmeats. staff report/app
