Pakistan investigating arrested Briton’s links with extremists

LAHORE: The Interior Ministry is investigating information provided by British intelligence officials on an arrested Briton’s alleged links with extremist networks in Pakistan, to track down terrorist organisations in Pakistan, according to sources. Intelligence officials arrested the Briton – identified as Rajib Karim, who is of Bangladeshi origin and an IT expert – from the British Airways’ office in Newcastle in February 2010. The sources told Daily Times Rajib acquired a fulltime job at the British Airlines call centre in Newcastle a couple of years ago. They said he was “heavily involved” in software development at the time of his arrest. The sources said Rajib’s computer allegedly contained encrypted files “showing” he was in contact with terrorists in Pakistan and Yemen. He now stands charged on three counts in Britain. The sources said senior intelligence officials strongly believed that a few defunct organisations had links with their counterparts in Bangladesh. They said the Interior Ministry had started investigating the information recovered from Rajib’s computer. A special team of officials from two intelligence agencies has been formed, and it is focussing on Karachi and Lahore, “where they have found some strong clues”. shahnawaz khan
