ISLAMABAD: The nation will hear good news regarding constitutional reforms by the end of this month, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Tuesday.
The president was addressing a ceremony to ink the seventh National Finance Commission Award, declaring it a “historic achievement” for the government.
“It is a victory for democracy, all the political parties and provinces and the policy of reconciliation. The NFC Award is an agreement by all federating units over the annual distribution of financial resources among the provinces by the federal government,” he said. “Democracy that returned to the country some time back, has demonstrated its strength. Let’s give it time to grow, give the people of Pakistan a chance to grow and they will prove a productive part of the global society,” Zardari said.
“It shows that given political will, the issue of trust deficit can be addressed,” he added.
He said the federal government had willingly given up its share in the divisible pool to increase the provinces’ share, adding the largest province had shown great flexibility in reaching a consensus.
Trust deficit: Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said the NFC Award would reduce the trust deficit between the federation and provinces as well as among the provinces.
He termed democracy the real dividend of the award, where the political leadership had shown utmost consideration and maturity in reaching a consensus.
