President signs transplantation of human organs bill: Law ineffective without public support: President Zardari

* Bill makes unauthorised transplants punishable by up to 10 years

ISLAMABAD: Seeking help from the masses in countering illegal organ trade, President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday said no law could be effective without public support.

The president signed a bill dealing with transplantation of human organs bill,
which now makes the sale and unauthorised transplant of body organs punishable with up to 10 years in prison and provides for a regulatory mechanism, including a high-level federal monitoring authority as well as the formation of evaluation committees for the removal, storage and transplantation of human organs and tissues for therapeutic purposes.

The president said by using modern technology, Pakistan could be made a better place to live in and appreciated the political consensus evolved to make the legislation a success.
