Hottest March in 50 years
ISLAMABAD: The country witnessed an unprecedented increase in temperatures on Saturday, with several areas experiencing record-breaking heat levels. Nawabshah, with a maximum temperature of 45 degrees Celsius, broke its 50-year-old record, while the Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) recorded a maximum temperature in March of 35 degrees Celsius in Islamabad, breaking a 33 year-old record for the month. According to the met office, a maximum temperature of 35 degrees Celsius was recorded in Islamabad and a one-degree higher temperature was recorded in Rawalpindi. Also, other southern parts of the country, including Karachi, Hyderabad and Lahore recorded their hottest days of March in 24 years, with mercury levels having crossed 41 degree Celsius already. In Multan, Jhang, Sahiwal and Faisalabad temperatures of 36 to 40 degree Celsius have been recorded. According to the met office, the reason of the record temperature was a prolonged dry spell, as no significant rain has fallen during the last three weeks. “The summer season has started at such a high temperature,” a met official said. mahtab bashir
