‘Media should abide by professional norms, ethics’

Staff Report

LAHORE: Journalists and other media personnel should abide by the norms and ethics of their profession while reporting and should not cross any defined or un-defined boundaries, renowned television anchor Ayesha Alam Khan said on Monday.

She made these comments at a seminar held under the auspices of the South Asian Women in Media (SAWM) titled ‘Media Ethics and Individual Freedom’.

Beside a large number of journalists, columnists, analysts and TV talk show hosts made up the majority of the audience at the seminar held at the SAWM Secretariat in Lahore.

The panelists at the seminar – including Ayesha, Fahad Hussain and Farah Zia – answered various questions put forward by the participants.

On a question about the monitoring of news quality and training of media personnel, Hussain said the Pakistani media is in its ‘growing’ stage and will take a while before standards could be set.

The participants of the seminar concluded that an improvement in the professional skills and expertise of the media personnel, particularly those dealing with political and current affairs, and covering terrorism-related issues was the need of the hour.
