Vote count continues in Gujrat, D I Khan by-election



GUJRAT/DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Vote count began on Wednesday after polling process concluded in by-elections of Gujrat and Dera Ismail Khan.

The voting commenced at 8am and lasted till 5pm without any disruption. On the whole, the polling process remained peaceful and no major untoward incident took place.

At least 56 of 112 polling stations in Gujrat constituency PP-111 were declared highly sensitive ahead of the poll. Over 2000 security personnel were deployed to maintain peace at the polling stations.

The seat fell vacant after an MPA of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Haji Nasir Mehmood was declared ineligible.

Seven candidates, including Haji Imran Zafar of PML-N and PML-Q’s Mian Imran Masud, were competing on the Punjab Assembly seat.

There are at least 161,394 registered voters in this PA constituency; of them, men are 88,383 and women 73,011 in total.

Apart from Gujrat constituency, 77 polling stations were set up in Dera Ismail Khan constituency PF-65, City-II, of them, 74 wre declared sensitive and three polling stations—one for women and two for men in Badh—had been declared as highly sensitive.

Eight candidates are contesting on this NWFP constituency, with 80,000 registered voters; of them, 48,987 are men and women are 31,000 in number.

Tough fight was expected between PPP’s Samiullah Alizai and Maulana Lutfur Rehman of the JUI-F.

Public holiday was declared in Dera Ismail Khan today.
