Kayani meets Gates, Mullen; discusses defence tiesWASHINGTON: Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Kayani met senior US defence officials on Monday at the start of a week of wide-ranging talks to “deepen the cooperation” between Washington and Islamabad, said officials. Kayani’s meeting with US Defence Secretary Robert Gates and the top US military officer, Admiral Mike Mullen, lasted for almost an hour. “Their discussion focussed primarily on bilateral defence issues, but it was part of the larger US-Pakistan strategic dialogue,” said a Pentagon statement. The talks aim “to build on efforts begun last year to broaden the relationship and deepen the cooperation between our two nations”, it said. afp
