Power shortfall needs sincere efforts: Ashraf
ISLAMABAD: Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf Tuesday informed the National Assembly that traders and power looms industries of Faisalabad have called off strike against power outage realizing the real situation and efforts by the government.
"On directives of the Prime Minister, I visited Faisalabad on Monday and met traders, members of Chamber of Commerce and Industry and power looms industrialists. I told them that country was facing power shortfall and government was sincerely striving to resolve the issue," he informed the House responding to point of order.
He said the traders and industrialists have realized the situation and have called off strike when they were told as how the problem can be resolved.
"The power crisis is a national issue. It is not a matter of point scoring. We will have to give serious and sincere thought to seek solution," said the minister, adding due to less rains, dams are lying dry that ultimately affect power production.
Earlier, Abid Sher Ali told the House that Faisalabad, known as Manchester of Pakistan is facing 22-hour power outage leading to the closure of textile and power looms industry.
Sardar Mushataq Khan opposed the construction of a small dam in Haripur area for water supply to Abbottabad, what he said would destroy the orchards of 22 union councils.
He said the government should work on an alternate solution to the problem as the people from Haripur have announced a strike on April 3 to protest the plan.
