Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with US: Fehmida
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with the United States and is fully committed to a long-term and strategic relationship spanning various arenas, National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza said on Tuesday.
Talking to a 3-member Congressional delegation headed by Member of US House of Representatives/Chairman House Democracy Partnership Initiative David Price, which had called on her at the Parliament House, she said Pakistan desires to further enhance its existing relations through active interaction between its people and governments.
Fehmida appreciated the US administration’s commitment to ensuring Pakistan’s stability, security and prosperity through support for economic and social development. She called for the need to identify core interests and to find common grounds to ally efforts for US support.
Dr Fehmida said the biggest challenges being faced by Pakistan are poverty alleviation, unemployment, illiteracy and energy crisis and Pakistan needs US support in these areas besides its support in the fight against terrorism.
She appreciated the launch of the House Democracy Partnership Initiative by the US House of Representatives.
David Price said the US was interested in developing multi-faceted long-term relations with Pakistan. He said it wanted Pakistan to be a strong democratic country and was ready to support it in this regard. He underlined the need to expedite efforts for ending terrorism and extremism from the region. staff report
