LHC dismisses petition requesting lifetime ban on Butt, Asif, Amir
Staff Report
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC), on Monday, dismissed a petition requesting lifetime ban and confiscation of assets of three Pakistani cricketers, namely Salman Butt, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Amir, for their alleged involvement in the corruption case which, according to the petitioner, brought bad name to the country.
The court held a preliminary hearing on Monday and rejected the petition on the ground that “Petitioner, Advocate Rana Ilamudin Ghazi, is not liable to move the petition since he had not been affected by the issue directly”.
Ilamudin submitted that these three players were sentenced by an anti-corruption tribunal of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
He stated that the convicts not only violated the ICC and PCB rules but also worked against the country and its people’s benefit. “The punishment given by the ICC to the cricketers is much lesser than that what they deserve,” he said.
“Cricketers, due to the popularity of the game, have become role models for the citizens and therefore, there was no room for corruption in cricket,” he said, adding, “Along with the cricketers, investigations needed to be held against the PCB high-ups as well.”
Referring to the former cricketer Sarfaraz Nawaz’s statement, Ilamudin said that stern action should be taken against all guilty persons in order to improve the state of cricket in country.
In addition to the freezing of accounts of the above-mentioned players, Ilamudin requested to freeze all assets of the PCB high-ups as well as the PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt, Pakistani cricket team manager, and the coach as well, accusing them of being part of all the corruption in the board.
