Sarabjit Singh goes to SC for review of his case
Staff Report
LAHORE: Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner, filed a petition before the Supreme Court (SC) on Saturday for review of his appeal against conviction on terrorism charges.
Sarabjit’s counsel, Owais Sheikh, moved the petition before the Lahore Registry of the SC and argued that the man behind the bomb blast in Pakistan in 1990 was actually Manjeet Singh, with whom Sarbajit had been confused. “Manjeet was arrested in India in December 2010. He is an international terrorist and member of a criminal syndicate,” he added.
He said that Manjeet was the real culprit as he frequently visited Pakistan. “Even when the blast took place in 1990, he was present in the country,” he said, adding that Sarbajit was the victim of mistaken identity.
He pleaded to the court to order reopening of the case and fresh adjudication on
the matter.
Sarbajit, who had been arrested in 1990, was accused of carrying out bomb blasts in Lahore, Kasur and Faisalabad.
The Lahore High Court awarded him death sentence in January 2003 in four different cases and the SC upheld the verdict in its judgment on August 18, 2010.
The apex court had also turned down his appeals in other cases.
