IMF agrees to extend talks with govt
By Sajid Chaudhry
ISLAMABAD: In a show of confidence in the government’s commitment on economic reforms, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday agreed to extend the talks with the government for three days as the latter had assured the IMF mission that Pakistan will finalise the modalities of measures to be taken by March 30 within extended period of three days and will share it with the mission by the end of talks.
Talks between Pakistan’s economic managers, led by Finance Minister Dr Hafeez Shaikh and the mission, headed by IMF Assistant Director Adnan Mazarei were supposed to conclude on Tuesday evening, however, the firm assurance by the government resulted in an extension.
Mission head, Mazarei, at the conclusion of the talks held at a local hotel, termed the talks as fruitful and informed the media that Pakistan and the IMF were on the same page. He said IMF was cognisant of the difficulties faced by Pakistan, adding that the mission wanted to put Pakistan’s economy on a sustainable growth path. IMF would continue its discussion with Pakistani authorities, Mazarei said.
