LHC reserves verdict in Zardari’s dual office case
Staff Report
LAHORE: After the conclusion of arguments on Thursday, a full bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) reserved the verdict on identical petitions against President Asif Ali Zardari for holding dual offices of co-chairperson of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and president of Pakistan.
The bench was holding ex parte proceedings on the petitions moved by the Pakistan Lawyers Forum (PLF) headed by AK Dogar, Engineer Ghulam Jillani and Advocate Asif Mehmood Khan, who sought disqualification of the president for holding a political office. Different benches of the high court have been hearing the petitions since 2009.
In the beginning, a lawyers panel of the federal government comprising Talib H Rizvi, SM Masood, Saiful Malook and Ramzan Chaudhry, had contested the petitions but later boycotted the proceedings, expressing dissatisfaction and disinterest in the court after it had refused to hear the petition of the federation’s objection first. The bench had decided to proceed ex parte with the petitions, as nobody had been appearing on behalf of the federal government for the last many hearings.
