PA turns into pandemonium; session adjourned

LAHORE: Chaos was the order of the day when opposition and treasury benchers resorted to sloganeering for more than an hour during Punjab Assembly session with Rana Mohammad Iqbal in the chair on Tuesday.

It was for the third day running that no official business or agenda could be undertaken by the house and the session had to be adjourned by the chair when all efforts to pacify the members failed. The house would resume business on Wednesday at 10:00 am.

Assembly session started about an hour behind the scheduled time. Things got out of hand when PPP Parliamentary leader Shaukat Basra, speaking on a point of order, stated that Unification Bloc leader Dr Tahir Ali Javed was not even a qualified doctor, his degree had been cancelled in the US and alleged that he was wanted by the US courts.

A scuffle was prevented between MPA Shaukat Basra and visibly enraged Dr Tahir Ali Javed who exchanged hot words as the tempers rose inside the house--complementing the soaring mercury outside the building. The incident led to 'uninterrupted' sloganeering against each other and the deafening noise rose to an extent that the house turned into a pandemonium.

The members on both sides of the divide put aside the principles of decorum and nicety and resorted to slogan chanting against each other.

Earlier, PML (Q) Parliamentary Leader in the PA Ch Zaheeruddin, speaking on a point of order, drew the attention of the chair towards Unification Bloc Parliamentary Leader Dr Tahir Ali Javed's occupation of seats reserved for the ministers in the house. The Speaker Rana Mohammad Iqbal, Deputy Speaker Rana Mashood Ahmed Khan, Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and Secretary PA consulted the 'seating plan' for the house to ascertain the exact location of the seat for Dr Tahir Ali Javed. He was led to his seat as per seating plan.

Speaker PA Rana Iqbal adjourned the session for Wednesday (tomorrow) at 10:00 am.(APP)
