German chancellor telephones prime minister

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani reaffirmed that Islam, the constitution of Pakistan and the manifesto of the ruling party clearly states grant of special rights to minorities. The tolerant people of Pakistan, he said, have always happily co-existed with the believers of all faiths.

The prime minister was talking to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who telephoned him on Monday evening to express sympathy and condolence over the assassination of federal minister for minorities affairs Shahbaz Bhatti.

Gilani said that Bhatti, who was a national leader, became one of the many victims of terrorism. Being a member of the federal cabinet, he added, the minorities minister was the ambassador of inter-faith harmony and had contributed in bringing the people of different faiths closer to each other. It was with his efforts, he said, that special seats for minorities were created in the Senate.
