ISLAMABAD: Defence Secretary Lt General Syed Athar Ali, after the meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence at the parliament House on Monday, told the reporters that the inquiry report regarding the Airblue plane crash in Islamabad has been finalised.
He confirmed that the Ministry of Defence has received an inquiry report of the plane crash and concerned high officials have started examining its findings. The report would be presented before the prime minister upon completion of examination in the Defence Ministry, he said.
He also informed that the new Benazir Bhutto International Airport would be functional by June 2013 and current progress on the project is satisfactory.
“In a meeting last week, chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari, all the executing agencies were present and reviewed the project’s progress, especially construction of roads, airport infrastructure, water and electricity facilities,” he said.
Separately, a committee chaired by MNA Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho inquired about the security arrangements made by the Airport Security Force and after taking briefing from ASF director general, directed to enhance and ensure fool-proof security at all the airports across the country. The committee also asked the ASF DG to introduce courses regarding public dealing and capacity building. The committee was informed by the ASF DG that the government is trying to get modern equipments for strengthening of security at all airports.
Meanwhile, the committee also discussed the report, prepared by a sub-committee, regarding regularisation of all honorary teachers of cantt and Garrison schools, consequently directing the Ministry of Defence to take all necessary steps for regularisation of the services of those teachers who had been serving for more than a decade.
The committee also expressed serious concerns regarding the future of those 119 graduate engineers from the APCOMS whose degrees were not recognised by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), adding, “The PEC should check the standards and facilities at the APCOMS and if they fulfil the required criteria, the students’ degrees should be given due recognition”.
