KP PA condemns desecration of holy Quran in US

By Zakir Hassnain

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Friday, condemning the desecration of the holy Quran by an American pastor and demanded the federal government call the US ambassador to lodge protest and convey the sentiments of the people.

Tabling the joint resolution, Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) parliamentary leader Abdul Akbar Khan said the US government should stop recurrence of such incidents in future as it provoked people. MPAs Nighat Yasmin Orakzai, PML-Q, Senior Minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour, ANP, Dr Iqbal Din Fana, JUI-F, Israrullah Khan Gandapur, PPP-S, Saqibullah Chamkani, ANP, Inayatullah Jadoon, PML-N, and Asif Bhatti, ANP, were the co-movers besides PPPP’s Abdul Akbar Khan.

During debate, PPPP minority member Prince Javed said the pastor’s satanic act had hurt the sentiments of Muslims across the world. “We condemn it and support Muslims,” said Javed and demanded strict punishment to the American pastor. He also demanded the US government stop recurrence of such incidents.

JUI-F’s Syeda Batool said Israel and the US were satanic powers. Israrullah Gandapur, PPP-Sherpao, said the incident had taken place at the behest of the US government.

Nighat Yasmin Orakzai, PML-Q, condemned the desecration of the holy Quran by a US pastor, saying it was a pre-planned plot. She demanded the federal government call the US envoy to the foreign office to apologise. “I’ll stage a sit-in outside the US consulate to protest if such incident happens again,” said the outraged woman MPA.

Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain said CIA contractor Raymond Davis case “was not a problem but was made one for vested interest”. Iftikhar criticised the Arab rulers who he said did not give fundamental rights to their people and were now paying the price. He said nobody could be allowed to hurt the religious feelings of others and criticise their faiths. “We respect all faiths and would not allow enemies to succeed in their nefarious designs,” said the minister. He said the federal government had raised issue at the diplomatic level. Iftikhar said the government was against terrorism and jihad would continue against terrorist.

Senior Minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour condemned Pastor Terry Jones and demanded action against him. Bilour said Muslims respected all holy books mentioned in the holy Quran. He said the West wanted division among Muslims.

The House also passed another resolution sympathising with Japanese people hit by devastating earthquake and tsunami. Israr Gandapur, PPP-S, said the Japanese government played a key role in the development of the country, particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He appreciated valuable contribution of Japan to the province’s development. Gandapur said people supported Japanese people in their difficult time. The House passed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Laws (Amendment) Bill 2011. The Act replaces the words “North-West Frontier” with “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa”.
