MQM turns eligible to contest elections

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday declared Muttahidda Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM) eligible for contesting the upcoming general election. The party submitted before the ECP statement of accounts, that was mandatory for the party to get eligible to apply for election symbol and participate in the elections, an official at the ECP told daily Times.
An ECP statement said the MQM, under Article 13 of the Political Parties Order, 2002, has submitted to the ECP a consolidated statement of accounts for the year 2010, which was awaited according to the record available in the commission. After inclusion of the MQM, the number of registered political parties which have qualified for applying for election symbol and contesting elections have raised to 124. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is the only major party left that has yet to qualify for contesting polls. Upon completion of intra-party polls and submission of their results, ECP will announce on the eligibility of the party for the next general election.
