1,000 shops and stalls burnt in Karachi sabzi mandi fire

KARACHI: Over 1,000 shops and stalls were burnt when a fire engulfed the sabzi mandi (vegetable market) located on Super Highway here on Wednesday.

According to eyewitnesses the fire started in a garbage pile which spread to a crate warehouse and shortly after engulfed several shops and stalls in the market.

It took over an hour for a fire engine to reach the site and other tenders were called after seeing the intensity of the blaze.

The city’s fire chief said this was a third degree fire and 20 fire engines were dispatched to extinguish the blaze which was finally brought under control after several hours. The fire chief added that fire engines had to repeatedly rush to the Sohrab Goth station for a supply of water which caused the delay.
