Elections on time, no subversion to be allowed, says Zardari
KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday reiterated that elections will be held on time and that the militants and extremists, and the sectarian elements supporting them will not be allowed to subvert the electoral process by creating a law and order situation. The president expressed this resolve while chairing a meeting to review the law and order situation in Sindh, particularly Karachi, in the wake of recent bomb blasts in the metropolis. He urged the provincial government and relevant agencies to take stern actions to ensure the safety and protection of lives and property of the citizens which, he said, was the prime responsibility and priority of the government. The meeting was attended among others by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, provincial ministers Pir Mazharul Haq, Muhammad Ayaz Soomro, Agha Siraj Khan Durrani, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sharjeel Memon, Sindh Chief Secretary Raja Muhammad Abbas, heads of law enforcement agencies and other high officials. Spokesperson to the president, Senator Farhatullah Babar, said that the president condemned the attack in Abbas Town of Karachi and offered Fateha for those killed in it. While expressing his sympathies with the bereaved families, Zardari directed full support and assistance in rehabilitation of the victims of the blasts and provision of best medical treatment on government expenses to all those affected by the bomb blasts. The president called upon all political forces and stakeholders to come forward, work hand in hand with the law enforcing agencies in Karachi and play their active role to restore peace and stability to the metropolis and bring the criminals to book regardless of their affiliations. Zardari said that they all had to work together and augment the government efforts to completely restore law and order and protect lives and properties of the citizens in the economic hub of the country. The president said that the government accords top priority to safeguarding the lives and properties of the citizens and that they would never be left at the mercy of a handful of vicious elements. He reiterated that those involved in violent activities would be traced and brought to justice. app
