Karachi law and order case: Rangers, IB, special branch present reports in SCKARACHI: A larger bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is hearing the Karachi law and order case.
During proceedings, Rangers, IB and special branch submitted their reports pertaining to the Abbas Town bombing.
The acting Inspector General Sindh Police, Ghullam Shabir Shekih informed the court that if there was complete deployment at police stations, the situation in the city would improve. The Chief Justice replied to the acting IGP that he had the court’s support and should take whatever steps possible to protect citizens. The Chief Justice remarked that a few police officers had taken the force hostage.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry told DG Rangers that maintaining law and order was his responsibility as he had already witnessed the performance of the police. The Chief Justice also asked DG Rangers what measures had been taken after information had been received regarding the Abbas Town blast on March 4. DG Rangers informed the court that an operation had been launched after the blast to arrest the perpetrators.
The Supreme Court also inquired from the Director IB why action was not taken if a report was present, adding that there was a power struggle in the city which had been given the colour of sectarianism.
Meanwhile SP Niaz Khosa said additional deployment of police could not be provided without a court order, to which the Chief Justice replied that why should he issue an order and asked what the government was doing.
Earlier during proceedings, the Sindh government claimed that compensation had been paid to the affectees of the Abbas Town tragedy. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that Geo News anchor Hamid Mir in his program had stated that no compensation had been paid.
The Chief Jusitice also thanked Hamid Mir and said his program highlighted issues faced by children and women and was based on facts.
Meanwhile Commissioner Karachi, Hashim Raza Zaidi informed the court that 118 cheques were ready for the Abbas Town affectees which would be sent to them by Friday evening.
