SC tells Gilani to file review against conviction

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to re-file the review petition against his conviction over contempt of court for not writing a letter to Swiss authorities for reopening of corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The sentence was awarded by a seven-member bench of the court in April last year. The court has also hinted at constituting a larger bench to hear Gilani’s case after he re-files the review petition against his conviction. Instead of engaging the services of Aitzaz Ahsan, who contest his contempt case and disqualification matter, the former prime minister appeared in person before a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. A large number of PPP lawyers and workers accompanied Gilani to the court for proceedings which lasted for more than three hours.

Replying to chief justice’s question why had he not filed the review petition against his conviction, Gilani said: “At the time of my conviction I wanted to raise my voice, but after the National Assembly speaker’s ruling the circumstances changed and my counsel also advised me against it.”
