Peaceful transition major achievement: Zardari

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday said completion of the tenure of the present government and a peaceful transition from one democracy to another is a major achievement of the present dispensation.

President Zardari told participants at a dinner he hosted for the outgoing lawmakers that the PPP government faced huge challenges during its tenure, including war against militancy, economic issues, recurrent natural disasters and energy crisis. He said that it is to the credit of the present government and maturity of the leadership that it pursued the policy of reconciliation and took all the political forces of the country along on the issues of national interests.

Presidential spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the president lauded role of the legislators for strengthening of democracy in the country and promoting the policy of reconciliation. Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani, Faryal Talpur, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Nazar Gondal, Rana Farooq Saeed Khan, Syed Naveed Qamar, Rehman Malik, Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, Mian Manzoor Wattoo, Farooq Hamid Naek, Khursheed Shah, Makhdoom Shahabud Din, Ch Ahmed Mukhtar, Imtiaz Safdar Waraich, Senator Jahangir Badar, Senator Sardar Fateh Muhammad Hassani, Rukhsana Bangash, Mehreen Anwer Raja, Fouzia Habib attended the dinner.

Separately, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani called on President Zardari at the Presidency.

During the meeting, the president exchanged views over completion of tenure by the current regime, caretaker set-up, current political scenario and upcoming general elections with the PM and the COAS. The military and civilian leadership of the country also discussed overall security and law and order situation in the country.

Advisor to the prime minister for National Harmony Dr Paul Bhatti also called on President Asif Ali Zardari and briefed him about the unfortunate incident of a criminal assault on a Christian colony in Lahore and various steps being taken for the rehabilitation of the affected people. staff report
