Caretaker PM stalemate expected to end with Sharif’s return

ISLAMABAD: Political pundits are expecting some progress over the appointment of a caretaker Prime Minister, with PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif returning to the country today.

Mian Nawaz Sharif had gone abroad a few days ago and is scheduled to hold a high-level party meeting to discuss the appointment of a caretaker Prime Minister. The appointment of caretaker prime minister has hit the impasse because of disagreement between Prime Minister Raja Pervez Asharf and Ch. Nisar Ali Khan. PPP and PML-N have so far failed to reach a consensus over their proposed names. According to PML-N sources, the meeting will also consider the situation following the withdrawal of Justice retired Shakirullah Jan for the party’s nominee as caretaker prime minister along with Justice retired Nasir Aslam Zahid and Rasool Bux Palijo.

Ch. Nisar Ali Kan had announced to withdraw the name of Shakirullah Jan a few days ago when he rejected the names proposed by PPP government before the dissolution of the National Assembly. Excluding the name of Justice retired Shakirullah Jan has annoyed Maulana Fazalur Rahman, Chief of JUI-F, who expressed his displeasure publicly when he said that the step has been taken without taking him on board. PML-N is not keen for the matter to be referred to the Election Commission of Pakistan. The party chief will hold detailed discussions on this issue and would also hold deliberations on the names to be forwarded for the parliamentary committee. staff report
