Caretaker PM nominees Justice (R) Khosa, Palijo discussed during committee meeting

ISLAMABAD: The first meeting of the Parliamentary Committee formed to appoint a caretaker prime minister concluded and members of the committee said nominees Justice (retd) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso and Rasool Bux Palijo were discussed.

Speaking to the media, Khursheed Shah said Ghulam Ahmed Bilour had been elected as the chairman of the committee which would be a position held on a rotational basis. A representative from the opposition would be elected as the chairman when the committee next meets on Thursday at 11 AM. Shah added that the rules of the committee were discussed during the first meeting.

Sardar Mehtab Abbasi informed the media that the committee deliberated on what fundamental characteristics should be possessed by the caretaker prime minister. “He should be impartial, intelligent, have administrative experience, no association with political party and should have a good standing in the country.”

Abbasi hoped that there would be a consensus but pointed that the caretaker prime minister could also be appointed with a 6-2 majority in the committee.

Farooq Naek informed reporters that new nominees could not be considered by the committee as per the constitution. “The committee has no authority to change the names sent by the prime minister and opposition leader.”

Naek added that the same names would be sent to the Election Commission of Pakistan if the committee failed to appoint a caretaker prime minister within three days.

The committee is tasked with appointing the care taker prime minister in three days or else the matter would be sent to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The government has nominated Dr Ishrat Husain and Justice (retd) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso, while the PML-N has finalized the names of Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid and Rasool Bux Palijo for the post of caretaker prime minister.

The coalition government is represented by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Khursheed Shah, Ghullam Ahmed Bilour and Farroq Naek, while Parvez Rasheed, Sardar Mehtab Abbasi, Khwaja Saad Rafique and Sardar Yaqoob are representing the opposition in the committee.
