Elections for National Assembly seats on May 11: presidential spokesman
ISLAMABAD: Pakistanis will come out to exercise their right to franchise and elect their next government in the center on May 11 (Saturday), the date announced by the presidential spokesman Wednesday for holding elections on National Assembly (NA) constituencies across the country.
President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday signed the summary for the date of election forwarded to him by Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.
Elections will also be held for provincial assemblies’ seats on the same day. However, it has not been officially made clear as yet.
According to presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar, the prime minister had advised the president to announce a suitable date for holding general elections to the National Assembly under Article 48 (1) of the constitution coupled with the relevant statutory provisions.
Election Schedule
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has set March 25-31 as the period for collection of nomination papers for the general elections.
According to the ECP, nomination papers of candidates will be scrutinized from March 23 till April 6.
From April 7, appeals raising objections against nomination papers would be filed while candidates can withdraw nomination papers till April 18.
The final list of candidates would be issued on April 19, twenty-two days before the date of general elections.
Candidates would be given 21 days for canvassing.
