Senate body asks for details of Pakistanis detained abroad
ISLAMABAD: The Standing Committee of Senate on Interior has sought from the Foreign Ministry the details of Pakistanis languishing in prisons in various parts of the world.
The officials of the Foreign Ministry did not turn up in the meeting of the committee on Tuesday. The committee expressed displeasure over the absence of the ministry’s officials and its chairman, Senator Talha Mahmood, said that he would carry out an investigation into this issue. “If they were found to be absent from the meeting intentionally, then the committee would move a privilege motion against them,” Talha announced.
The committee pointed out that Pakistanis languishing in jails overseas is a matter of national importance and the Foreign Ministry officials should be present in the meeting to present their stance on it. It was also noted that extradition of prisoners is also under consideration with various countries and the Foreign Ministry should brief the committee on this issue too. The committee members opined that the officials of the Foreign Ministry were not taking the issue seriously and because of this irresponsible attitude, the foreign secretary should either resign or should be fired. tanveer ahmed
