Restore peace in Karachi within 15 days, orders SC

KARACHI: Supreme Court (SC) has ordered Sindh Government to restore peace in the metropolis within 15 days, Geo News reported on Friday.

A five-member larger bench, headed by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard Karachi law and order case on Friday.

The apex court ruled that lives and property of people are not secure in Karachi and ensuring law and order is the constitutional duty of the government.

IG Sindh told the court that the accused, which were arrested, belong to various political parties.

Chief Secretary, IG SIndh and DG Rangers accepted the existence of no-go area in Karachi and stated that criminal elements are under the shelters of political parties, while they also urged political parties to turn down criminal elements from their rows.

Earlier, the court sought satellite images and maps with respect to land grabbing along with seeking report over affected areas. It also asked DG Rangers and IG Sindh to submit a joint statement to the court.

Furthermore, IG Sindh and DG Rangers were ordered to lead the operation to abolish no-go areas from the city.

The Chief Justice questioned the Rangers' counsel about arresting of the accused involved in the killing of Rangers personnel in Lyari. On this, the lawyers told that 18 persons had been arrested during an operation in Lyani on Friday morning.

The CJ reprimanded the Rangers' lawyer and said that the court is aware about the security forces efficiency and action. He referred to the eight killings in the city on Thursday and said that the Rangers received huge budget and police were given the rights but they did not give any result.

SSP Niaz Khosa apprised the bench that police receive calls after apprehending the accused so they have to release them under pressure.
