‘PPP achievements will have lasting impact on democracy’
LAHORE: Former Deputy Opposition Leader of Punjab Assembly, Shukat Basra, stated a statement on Saturday that the landmark achievements of PPP democratic government during the last five years would have lasting impact on democracy including federation of the country and empowerment of people on durable basis.
He said that the historic accomplishments like restoration of 1973 Constituion, provincial autonomy, National Finance Award, identity to the Pashtoon people of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa, special status to Gilgit/Baltistan, Balochistan Package, promulgation of Political Parties Act in FATA, completion of tenure of parliament and Pakistan attaining the status of wheat exporting, instead of wheat importing country.
He said that the assertion of Shahbaz Sharif that the country had gone back to fifty years was merely a reflection on his sense of proportion which was driven by his bias and prejudice.
He maintained that Punjab had certainly gone back fifty years because Sharif’s skewed up development strategy focused on Lahore that created deep scars between the people of Lahore and the rest of the province.
He said that a man of ordinary prudence would laugh at Sharif’s criticism on Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project as it was the quickest solution for energy-starved Pakistan as the gas would start flowing by the end of next year to run the industry to its full capacity. pr
