Committee fails to agree on Punjab CM

* Formulates modalities for consideration of proposed names for the slot

LAHORE: The Parliamentary Committee on appointment of caretaker Punjab chief minister, in its first meeting at the Punjab Assembly Secretariat on Sunday, remained inconclusive, however it has formulated the modalities for consideration of the proposed names.

Former law minister Rana Sanaullah Khan stated this while briefing the media after the committee meeting. He said the committee had also sought advice from Punjab Law Department’s secretary and advocate general of Punjab for changing the proposed names –Justice (r) Amir Raza and Khawaja Azhar that had been proposed by the outgoing government, and Justice (r) Zahid Hussain and Najam Sethi (senior journalist) from the former opposition. The committee would resume its meeting today (Monday) to decide about the caretaker chief minister, he added.

The committee members include Rana Sanaullah Khan, Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, Iqbal Channar from the former government’s side, and Maj (r) Zulfiqar Gonal, Shaukat Mahmood Basra advocate and Chaudhry Zaheerud Din represented the former opposition in the Punjab Assembly. The committee’s first meeting was chaired by Rana Sanaullah Khan, while the chairmanship of the meeting will be changed on all three days.

Rana Sanaullah Khan said the parliamentary committee was striving hard to manage a consensus on one of the four proposed names for Punjab’s caretaker chief minister, adding that the committee would consider two names in its Monday meeting. To a question, he said no objection had so far been raised against Najam Sethi as caretaker chief minister of Punjab. To another question, he said they accept Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (r) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso as decided by the Election Commission of Pakistan. “We hope that he (Khoso) will come up to expectations of the people and hold free and fair elections.”

While Chaudhry Zaheerud Din of PML-Q said they had participated in the committee meeting with all sincerity but “I want all politicians to take important decisions at their own to remove the general perception that we are unable to decide about any matter”. All the nominees for the caretaker chief minister were of great importance, he said and added that it was unjustified to raise objection on any of the proposed candidate prior to the parliamentary committee meeting. app
