ECP allots ‘arrow’ symbol to PPPP

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Monday resolved the controversy over “arrow” as election symbol deciding the matter in favour of Pakistan Peoples Party-Parliamentarians.
The commission reserved its decision on registration of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) as a political party in the name of Safdar Abbasi or Ghanva Bhutto. The matter was heard by the four-member commission comprising Justice (r) Muhammad Roshan Essani, Justice (r) Riaz Kiyani, Justice (r) Shahzad Akbar Khan and Justice (r) Fazalur Rehman. During the course of arguments, PPP-Parliamentarians’ Farooq H Naek contended that the party had contested 2002 and 2008 polls with “arrow” as election symbol. He argued that the no other party could also be registered with the title of Pakistan Peoples Party.
Naek also produced the report containing the names of the new office-bearers of the party in which Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has been appointed as chief patron of the party. He apprised the commission that Ghanwa Bhutto was trying to hijack the party and it will not be allowed. Following the commission’s decision, the activists of the PPP-Parliamentarians and those from the rival group headed by Naheed Khan clashed with each other. Two people fainted during the scuffle and were shifted to hospital for treatment.
