SC allows Waheeda Shah to contest polls

Islamabad: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate Waheeda Shah to take part in the forthcoming general elections. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had disqualified Shah after she had slapped an Assistant Presiding Officer (APO) in Tando Mohammad Khan during by-polls on Feb 25, 2011. The ECP had declared Waheeda ineligible to contest election for two years. A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk resumed the hearing of Waheeda Shah’s a petition against her disqualification by the ECP. During the proceedings, the court terminated Shah’s disqualification and allowed her to contest the forthcoming polls and adjourned the hearing for two weeks. Shah had prayed the court to suspend the verdict of the ECP against her till final decision of the apex court in the current matter. staff report
