APDA seeks transfer of powers to councillors
QUETTA: The members of the Balochistan All Parties Democratic Alliance (APDA) on Friday asked the government to transfer powers to the newly elected councillors at the earliest so that the elections schedule for chairmen, mayor and special seats could be announced. Addressing a press conference at the Quetta Press Club, APDA members Abdul Rahsheed Nasir of Awami National Party, Wahid Agha of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Ideological, Nazar Baoch of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Ghulam Nabi of BNP-M and Kamal Barozai of PML-N said that it has been three months since the councilors for the local bodies were elected, however, they are yet to be transferred power. They voiced their concern against the non-announcement of the elections of the chairmen, deputy chairmen and mayor. They also alleged that efforts were underway to buy the loyalties of the councilors and delaying tactics were being used for horse trading which, they said, would not be allowed. They said that the concerns they had raised before the local bodies elections proved true, however, they accepted the results for the sake of democracy and the masses. The APDA members said that they would not allow the government to involve in any sort of rigging and asked it to transfer the powers to the councilors at the earliest so that elections could be held for the chairmen, deputy chairmen, mayor and special seats. They warned that if the government failed to meet their demands they would go on a strike. They stated that they could also take legal action against the government for using “delaying tactics” and demanded the transfer of provincial election commissioner, alleging that his loyalties were completely with the government.
