KP finalizes plan to relocate IDPs in case of NWA operation
MIRANSHAH: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has finalized preparations to relocate Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of North Waziristan in case of a military operation in the militants’ infested tribal belt.
In this connection, a four-member committee comprising representatives of the provincial government and high-ranking officials of tribal areas as well as those of Disaster Management Authority has been constituted.
The committee tasked to oversee matters relating to the IDPs include Secretary home & tribal affairs, Secretary provincial and tribal law & order, and Director Generals of Disaster Management Authority in provincial and tribal areas.
The committee during its visit to Bannu was informed in a briefing by the commissioner that about 20,000 people left their residences in North Waziristan during February 20 and 28 following aerial strikes targeting militants’ hideouts.
In case of an operation by the government an estimated number of 50,000 people will become IDPs in the first phase. And if the operation picks up momentum the number could soar to a whopping 300,000 IDPs.
The committee was further informed that a camp will be set up for these IDPs at Bannu Indus Highway link road near Kashu Bridge.
