SHC notices top officials in land grabbing case

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday issued notices to chief secretary, secretaries of education, land utilization, works and services departments, commissioner Karachi and police officials on a petition against land grabbers for creating hurdles in construction of Government Girls Degree College in Shahnawaz Shar Goth, in Gulshan-e-Iqbal town.
The petitioners Nasreen Mubarak and three others of Sachal Girls Student Forum submitted that provincial government had approved setting up a girls college in Shahnawaz Shar Goth and provided land for construction of college in 2011.
They stated that total 39-acre was leased out to Shahnawaz Shar Goth, which included 8-acre land for amenity purposes, where college was being constructed. They told two-judge bench that land grabbers were being creating hurdles in construction work of college in order to illegally occupy the land.
The petitioner said that land grabbers had also filed lawsuit in court claiming ownership of 8-acre amenity land in village but there lawsuit was dismissed. They said that land mafia being backed by influential persons extending life threats to them and their families.
They said that land mafia wanted to entangle them in false and forged cases to stop them from voicing cause of girls being deprived of their right to education who cannot travel away from home to get higher education because of inconvenience.
Citing chief secretary, secretaries of education, land utilization, works and services departments, commissioner Karachi, DIGP East, SP Anti-encroachment cell and police officials as respondents, the petitioners requested the court to directed respondents to expedite the construction work of school and take action against land mafia.
The court was also pleaded to direct police officials to provide them protection. After hearing initial arguments, a division bench headed by Justice Ghulam Sarwar Korai issued notice to respondents and put off the hearing of case till March 17.
